Collection: Calder Alexander

(Philadelphia 1898 - New York 1976)

Alexander Calder is best known for his light and revolutionary kinetic art sculptures, called mobiles by Marcel Duchamp, which are counterpointed by the static sculptures stabiles .
Throughout his life, always moving between France and the United States, he devoted himself not only to sculpture, but also to painting, lithography and the design of tapestries, carpets, jewellery and toys (including circus-themed ones).
In the years of his greatest artistic maturity, Calder creates lithographs and engravings, thanks above all to the fruitful collaboration with the Aimé Maeght gallery in Paris. His personal interpretation of spaces, forms, signs and colors in movement is also evident in his prints: the deepest meaning of printing is, in fact, in being a means to spread thought and, since it is art, this means must be original, beautiful, engaging and possibly economical.
Calder's works arouse great appreciation among the public and critics: special issues of the art magazine Derrière le miroir were dedicated to him (created to publicise his original lithographs), he received the first prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale, personal exhibitions of his work were set up at the MoMA and in Paris and the Guggenheim in New York honoured him with a retrospective exhibition.
