Collection: Dorazio Piero

(Rome 1927 - Perugia 2005)

Piero Dorazio is an Italian painter and one of the greatest exponents of European abstractionism. He began his career with figurative works, but these later took on a cubist and then futurist spirit. He also went through a constructivist period, then an informal one.
At the age of twenty he participated in the drafting of the manifesto “Forma I”, which would guide his future work.
In 1950 he founded the bookshop-gallery “L'age d'Or”, an artists' cooperative for the dissemination of art and artistic printing.
He specializes in Italian Renaissance art, but at the same time continues his work as a painter, art critic, lecturer and exhibition organizer.
Since 1984 he has collaborated with the Corriere della Sera, becoming the newspaper's accredited art critic.
His works are characterized by the use of lines, geometries and colors, elements that represent his stylistic figure, thanks also to a careful study and subdivision of spaces. The "gesture" is of capital importance for Dorazio: his "grids" of overlapping lines and colors, which can create a clever optical melange of bright and contrasting tones, are the expression of his gestures.
