This work, in which Mount Fuji is seen through a crack in the trunk of a cherry tree, is part of Hiroshige's final series of prints entitled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Hiroshige designed this series in a large vertical format, which allowed him to demonstrate a bold compositional skill, particularly his predilection for balancing foreground elements with landscape backgrounds.
