Kamisaka Sekka (Kyoto 1866-1942) is a Japanese artist and designer, considered the last great supporter of the Rinpa artistic tradition. In 1901, sent by the Japanese government, he went to Glasgow where he was strongly influenced by Art Nouveau and studied the phenomenon of Japanism, trying to understand which elements or aspects of Japanese art were most attractive to the Western world. Back in Japan, he began teaching at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, and experimenting with Western tastes, styles and artistic methods, which he would blend into his works in traditional Rinpa style, giving them a very personal and modern overall effect.
